Greetings all! Apologies for going radio silent, but things have transpired. @theembassylovesyou is being evicted from our space at the warehouse as a result of SubSuperior activities. Despite this misunderstanding we bear no ill will toward our landlords (who have taken us in and provided a wonderful space in which experimental arts and artists have incubated). We acknowledge that in our capacities as functionally unreasonable artists we are occasionally compelled to operate in a space of asking forgiveness rather than permission, and that people have differing definitions of “secret cult meetings” (which were explicitly allowed under our rental agreement). We have been instructed to remove HEXAS and not to operate it from our slip. We regret that this has shortened our festival on such a perfect Duluth day, and we thank you all for your love, enthusiasm, and beautiful contributions. We’ll be working on what to do with HEXAS from here, and WE NEED A NEW SPACE. Who’s got a warehouse or other suitable space for us? Must we really take to the high seas to make spaces for art? This is part of a very tragic and troubling pattern of artist displacement in our fair city.

With winds keeping us off the lake today, and afte

With winds keeping us off the lake today, and after a fairly epic maiden voyage aboard HEXAS last night, we’ll be hosting a low key gathering to experiment and envision underwater sound making with all of our resident and visiting artists, aquasonic agents, and sponsors this evening at the Embassy warehouse, 6-8. Bring yourselves and refreshments/snacks if you’d like!

For our other wonderful fans of the lake and our little festival, we encourage you to take some time to appreciate and care for the lake…perhaps a partake in a little walk and beach cleanup today or soon.

Stay tuned for coming days’ happenings as we take a day to commune, reflect, and regroup.

SubSuperior public works dept. has made massive movements toward a bigger, better HEXAS. Join us to participate in finishing touches, getting acquainted, and celebrating the launch of the Hexels. A joyous day. A spectacle to behold.

Accouterments: things befitting the christening of the ship that will deliver us to our bright future. Canoes, kayaks, SUPs, and rope if you’d like to partake in the historic first annual Hexel paddling challenge.

In addition to beloved local artists/instigators we’re excited to report that six world-class guest artists will be traveling to Duluth from as far as Miami, New Jersey, North Carolina and Detroit! (Pictured here are the Committed Duo, who will be returning to this year’s festival.)

This is a talented and dedicated collective of creatives whose primary goal is to inspire wonder and delight. We humbly request your support in this ambitious endeavor. Artists are traveling here on their own dime.

DO mess with HEXAS. SubSuperior’s HEXAS (Hexagonal EXtraterritorial Aquautomous State) is a floating platform for community art happenings comprising multiple interconnected hexagonal floating cells (Hexels). Cheap to build, rapidly scalable, and open source. Sponsoring, owning, and/or building one's own Hexel is a form of accessible radicalism. Modular and reconfigurable, HEXAS is SubSuperior's mobile stage and staging ground for artphibious action.

0) HEXAS (Hexagonal EXtraterritorial Aquautonomous State)

1) HEXAS comprises any number of individual hexagonal cells

2) that tile and interconnect, forming larger structures.

3) Individual hexagonal platforms are called “HEXELS." They are:
Uniform in size (5’ per side)
Cheap and simple to construct
Capable of acting as individual “pixels” (hence the name Hexel) — Duluth’s outer harbor is the ultimate display screen, capable of visualizing the collective subconscious thoughts/desires of/for the entire city.

Recounting the days of the week that was. Day 6: the Committed Duo (Jennifer Beatty (NC) and Juraj Kojš (MIA)) led participants on an enchanting interactive sound walk through the forest and dunes to the lake, where a piano on a hexagonal floating platform awaited the duo’s boarding for a floating and eventually sinking performance. The audience filled and placed sandbags on the platform to sink it with piano and players on it, until the performance transitioned to a beach dance party.

#subSuperior is an entirely grassroots, gonzo effort at this point. We thank everyone who bought merch and made donations. And, that’s a wrap! For day 7 of the festival, we offered a gift to the lake and city we love in the form of a floating piano. On an idyllic #perfectduluthday beach going kids of all ages joyfully encountered the beached instrument near the Park Point beach house. We then towed the piano back along the the length of the point and through the shipping canal with a unicorn mask-clad attendant playing a meditative duo with the lake and the waves.
